Living there: the practical facts

Banking

Accounts are opened in pesos and US dollars once you hold a cédula or a residency file in progress; banks apply full source-of-funds checks under Uruguay's CRS reporting regime, so bring the same evidence you used for medios de vida.

Healthcare

The Sistema Nacional Integrado de Salud is mandatory for residents: workers and their families are covered through FONASA via BPS; others join a mutualista or private insurer directly. The carné de salud laboral, from a Ministerio de Salud Pública-licensed provider, is a residency requirement.

Language

Spanish for every official step — the DNM requires an interpreter at your appointment if you do not speak it, and all foreign documents must be translated by a Uruguayan public translator. English is common in business and in Punta del Este.

Property

Foreigners can buy and own property outright with no restriction; purchases are handled by an escribano. Property counts towards the DGI investment tests (UI 3,500,000 with 60 days' presence, or UI 15,000,000) and towards the Impuesto al Patrimonio base.
